Performance-based interviewing (PBI) is a smart way for veterans (and anyone) to shine during a job search—and for employers to hire the right people. Instead of guessing what someone might do, PBI is all about what you’ve already done in real-world situations.

How Performance-Based Interviewing Works

  1. Ask for Real Stories
Instead of hypothetical questions, PBI interviewers want to hear about your real experiences. For example:
“What did you do when faced with a tough deadline?”
This shows how you handled past challenges and what you learned.

  2. Focus on Essential Skills
Before your interview, think about the skills needed for the job. Prepare a few stories that highlight leadership, teamwork, adaptability, or any skill the new role requires.

  3. Use the STAR Method
Make your answers clear and structured with STAR:

  • Situation
  • Task
  • Action
  • Result
This helps interviewers understand exactly what you did and how it turned out.
  1. Demonstrate Future Value
By seeing how you faced challenges in the past, employers can picture how you’ll contribute in the future.

Why It’s Good for Veterans

You’ve worked in high-pressure, team-driven environments—and those experiences count. Many companies want to hire veterans because of proven skills and experience. PBI gives you the chance to connect your story with the job.
